Historical context:
Written in 1903, in response to an official competition to honor the nation’s 100th anniversary, the Haitian national anthem was officially adopted in 1904.It is named “La Dessalinienne” in honor of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, revolutionary leader and the first ruler of an independent Haiti.
Unusually, at least in the Americas, the anthem is mentioned directly in the nation’s constitution. La Dessalinienne also does not contain a traditional chorus, making it somewhat unusual for a longer piece with numerous verses. (The anthems of the United States and the Dominican Republic are similar in this respect, but it does not appear to be a common practice for longer pieces of music.)
The first and last verses of the anthem form a de facto shortened version that can be more easily sung at popular events.
